If you are ready to create a colour palette that works for your house, below are some simple steps to follow:
Before doing anything else, determine the colours you are stuck with. Then, all of the fixed elements automatically become part of your colour palette. Those fixed elements could include cabinetry, flooring, trim, wall tiles, and countertops.
While most of your fixed elements are probably neutral colours, they have colour undertones. In order to choose colours, study what undertone colours you are dealing with.
Choosing a colour scheme :Professional advice suggests you select your colour scheme based on inspiration. You may want to choose an inspiration you wish to appreciate but do not love. You may not apprehend the colour theory behind your inspiration, which makes it impossible to add more colours to the palette. Somehow, you get stuck in your inspiration.
However, it is better to start with the overall feeling you want for your house and your favourite colour. Once you know which colour scheme is ideal, then look for inspiration in nature, fashion, interiors and fabrics to help you create the ultimate palette.
Choosing the neutrals :Neutrals are an integral part of a colour palette. You may want to choose a white and a dominant neutral colour for ultimate success. For example, choose a white with the same undertone as your house’s fixed elements. It is recommended to test samples of several white colours. They all look white in the store; however, you will be able to see the difference in the undertones on the wall.
Determining one bold colour :Choose a bold colour that will be the boldest in the entire colour palette you created. That means it will either be the darkest or the most saturated one. If you are colour-shy, choose colours that serve as neutrals.
Extending your colour palette :A rule of thumb for a cohesive colour palette is to add no more than five distinctive colours throughout your home. Choose a white, a neutral and three different colours to complete your desired colour palette.
However, that does not mean you are restricted to only five colours:
- Choose more colours that are either darker or lighter versions of your chosen colours
- Pick colours that suit an undertone in one of your neutral colours and match your colour scheme
